In The Womb

Posted by comot81 on September 10, 2005

I got to watch little bits of “In The Womb” on cable juz now. “In The Womb” chronicles on the development of a child from fertilization to birth. Watching kind of exciting and so eye-opening. The miracle of life happening in a small space, that is a mother’s womb.

The two-hour documentary, uses the latest high-tech 4-D ultrasound images to capture a developing girl in the womb.

The earliest movement by the foetus is at the 8th weeks. By 12 weeks or so they are seen yawning and performing individual finger movements. At end of the first trimester, the film features the baby exhibiting reflex movements. The last trimester explores the baby’s ability to hear loud noises and deep tones through the fluids of the body, and even experience REM sleep.

The images reveal facial expressions, like smiling, at 20 weeks. Beyond 24 weeks fetuses may suck their thumbs, stick their tongues out (perhaps using newly developed taste buds to sample amniotic fluid imbued with the flavors of the mother’s food), and make apparently emotional faces. Many of the reflexes seem designed to help the fetus with tasks it will need after birth, such as opening its eyes and sucking.

So I learnt dat babies start sucking on their thumbs since their days in their mommies’ wombs. Dey actuali can suck on their other fingers but they prefer their thumbs. Dey also frown and blink. Isnt dat precious??

Babies in the womb can recognize their mothers’ voices prenatally, and even reflect an appreciation of their mothers’ rhythms in their own postnatal cries. Their mothers’ sound unique to them and does not sound like any other sound.

During the 7 months period, they are all developed and looking so cute.
